Are you physically prepared for unexpected weather changes or on-the-water emergencies? Beat the heat and join us for a moderately paced, early-morning endurance paddle around our beloved Egmont Key.
This trip will cover approximately 7 miles, with a primary focus on maintaining a Zone 2 heart rate—roughly 60–70% of maximum heart rate (see the Additional Information section below for details). Since there will likely be some variance among the participants, the pace will be adjusted to match the abilities and comfort levels of the group was a whole.
We'll take a short break around the halfway point, likely near the southern end of the island. During the stop, anyone interested can spend a few minutes working on stroke technique and refining paddling skills.
After the break, we'll get back on the water and continue our journey back toward the pier, building endurance while enjoying a beautiful morning paddle.
Location: Ft Desoto, Gulf Fishing Pier. GPS: 27.61426534071222, -82.7398391919841. Google Map Link. Note: Be sure to pay the parking fee of $6. Annual parking passes are available on line from Pinellas County.
Schedule: Meet at 8:00am; paddles in the water by 8:30. The plan is to be back at the pier be 11:30.
Additional Information: If you want to know what your age-based maximum heart rate should be for a healthy individual, you can use this calculator: https://www.calculator.net/target-heart-rate-calculator.html. Keep in mind that this a target rate and that each individual needs to self-evaluate based on their personal level of conditioning.
Difficulty: Level 2/3 due to speed and distance. The tide will be slack to begin with and will begin flooding throughout the trip. This seems conducive to a clockwise route around the island.
