TBSK Training Day: Kayak Fit!  Learn strategies for incorporating kayaking into your physical fitness training program.

Trip Leader/Coach: Anthony Sousa, 727-455-2615, anthony.g.sousa@gmail.com Note: Contact Anthony to volunteer as an assisting trip leader.

Description: The goal of this session is to look at physical fitness programs and how kayaking can be incorporated.  The idea is this: many people go to the gym for physical fitness, then go kayaking for recreation and relaxation. We'll ask, "Can it be both?"  By the end of the session we will have explored ideas like:

  • How to design your kayak workouts
  • How to program to improve elements like endurance, speed, and power
  • How to include a skill development aspect
  • How to modify workouts for different ability levels (scaling)
  • How to prepare with elements like mobility and recovery

And, yes, the class will include a skills development practical application ... read that as "Yes, we will do a fun kayak workout!  Yes, we will work on paddling skills!"

Location Notes: War Veterans Memorial Park. We'll meet at the big parking area near Shelter #4, not the usual spot near the kayak launch. Go to this link for a GPS location. We will stage kayaks on the big beach area north of the Shelter #4 parking. It's a short walking distance from parking to the beach, so you may want to drop your kayak off before parking, bring a dolly, or just ask a friend for a partner carry. Bathrooms, picnic tables, changing facilities and water are available.

Schedule: Meet at 9:00 AM, unload boats and gear, and be ready to start by 9:30. We will start with an on-shore discussion session, then move to the water later. We will finish before noon.  Bring a picnic lunch for afterward if you want.  Or, maybe a protein shake if you want to get in the gym workout mentality!

Additional information and Equipment Notes:

  • This training is open to all skill levels of paddlers. We will modify the workout portion to meet all fitness levels.
  • Gear approach: Keep it light. We will stay near shore and focus on a workout scheme. No need to carry tons of gear or lots of spare things. Recommended kit:
    • Kayak with bulkheads or flotation.
    • PFD with whistle
    • Paddle
    • Closed-toe paddling shoes
    • Hydration source
    • Journal and pen for on-shore discussion portion.
  • If you have any medical issues that might impact your paddling, please notify Anthony before the training so that they can be best equipped to assist you as needed.
