ALAFIA BANKS FOR THE SPOONBILLS – LEVEL I --LIMIT 9 PADDLERS

Description: We’ll paddle down the river, out into the Bay and around the spoil islands that are a wildlife sanctuary and nesting area for roseate spoonbills and other waterfowl. Since landing on the protected islands is forbidden by public ordinance, you should be prepared to stay in your boat for at least 2 1/2 hours at a time. All boats must have deck lines, sealed bow and stern flotation, and a length of at least 14 feet. Spray skirts required.
We’ll paddle about 5 – 6 miles in 2 – 3 hours with an onshore snack/lunch break toward the end of the trip.
Location: Williams Park 9425 US Hwy 41 S, Riverview, FL 3357
Schedule: Saturday April 25. Meet at 9AM for a 9:30 launch. Return by 1:30PM.
Additional information: At last check, there is no fee to park at Williams Park UNLESS you are towing a trailer or have a vehicle too long to fit into a conventional parking space. In that case there is a $5.00 fee. The park’s restrooms are often locked, but at least one port-a-potty is usually open. If you are driving south on Route 41 from the Selmon, convenience stores and fast food restaurants are scarce after you leave that interchange.
Required / suggested / restricted: All boats must have deck lines, sealed bow and stern flotation, and a length of at least 14 feet. Spray skirts required. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, bug repellant, a hat, and shoes that will protect you against oyster shells at take-outs. A waterproof outer shell is also a good idea.
