What:  Circumnavigate Egmont Key from Fort DeSoto Pier L 2.5-3

When: Saturday, February 21, 2026 Meet at 8AM, Launch by 8:30 AM 

Where: Fort DeSoto Pier (adjacent to Fort) – by the seawall/beach launch

Description:    

Egmont Key is nestled to the north of Anna Maria Island and south of Shell Key.  Once a historic fort, today it is a bird sanctuary, a place to snorkel from the ruins on the south gulf waters end and a favorite place to stop to walk the northern end of the beach and visit the historic relics.  We may stop  on the northern end of the island to explore weather and time permitting. 

Location: Fort DeSoto Park, 3500 Pinellas Bayway South, Tierra Verde, Florida 33715 Parking $6 via parking app.  At T past main entrance, turn right.  Turn left on road indicating fishing pier.

Schedule: Meet at 8:00AM to prep for launch by 8:30AM.  We'll aim to return around 11:45-12:15PM.  Restrooms are located by launch point.

Required gear:  Open to sea kayaks 15’ or longer.  Spray skirt and ability to wet exit, if needed. Participants must wear a PFD, bring plenty to drink, and dress for possible immersion. 

Difficulty: The trip is rated Level 2.5-3 due to the distance, open water shipping channel crossing, open water and possible small surf conditions. Ability to launch and land on beach in small surf may be required. 9-10 miles round trip.
