DESCRIPTION: We’ll be paddling about 2 hours at a leisurely pace. Depending on conditions, we may stay in the mangroves and hopefully see lots of waterfowl, paddle along the Bay shoreline with some nice views of the Tampa skyline, or do some combination of the two.
LOCATION/SCHEDULE: EG Simmons Park is located at 9680 Pennsylvania Avenue in Ruskin. Meet at 9:30 AM for a 10:00 launch at the traffic circle at the end of the road near picnic shelter #15. After entering the park, bear left at the fork. The road will eventually curve to the right, pass the power boat launch and the beach, and reach the traffic circle where you can park. There is a $2 per vehicle entry fee at the park.
REQUIRED/SUGGESTED: Any seaworthy kayak with flotation as well as deck lines and/or bow and stern grab loops is fine, but all participants must wear a PFD and carry a whistle or other sound-producing device. Be sure to bring plenty of water, a snack, sunscreen, bug repellent, and footwear that will protect you against possible oyster shells at take outs. Since water temperatures may still be below 70 degrees, it’s important to dress for possible immersion, so please avoid cotton as a base layer. A waterproof outer shell is also a good idea.
