TITLE: Kayak Camp on Shell Key – Level 2+ - 5 paddlers plus 1 trip leader due to permit limitations of 6 people.

DESCRIPTION: Meet Jill Mosteller at the Fort DeSoto boat ramp on Friday February 28, 2025 at 1:30 PM with a 2:00 PM launch to Shell Key. Each paddler must bring all necessary camping supplies (leave no trace). Optional shoreline paddle after camp is set up 2-5 miles. That night we will gaze at the stars (weather permitting). On Saturday morning, optional pack up and depart back to the boat ramp or paddle over to see the Everglades Challenge participants launch.
LOCATION: Ft. DeSoto boat ramp, 3500 Pinellas Bayway S, Tierra Verde, FL 33715 and Shell Key. We’ll launch from the boat ramp and take out will be the same location.
SCHEDULE: Meet at Ft. DeSoto boat ramp at 1:30 PM on Friday February 28th and launch at 2:00 PM. Paddle to Shell Key. Return on the morning of Saturday March 1st.
DIFFICULTY: Level 2+ all participants must be able to effectively paddle through the passes and tidal currents and launch in potential surf with a loaded kayak.
REQUIRED: minimum 15ft. Kayak with bulkheads and spray skirt, properly fitted PFD worn. Dress appropriately for the air and water temperatures. Bring all necessary camping equipment and enough food and water to sustain yourself for the entirety of the trip.
RECOMMENDED: Sunscreen, sunhat, neoprene or dry top, closed tow shoes, extra safety equipment like bilge, paddle float, radio, tow belt, and a dry back with additional layers if needed
