Qajaq Culture in North Greenland with Anthony Sousa
In summer 2024, TBSK member Anthony Sousa, a.k.a. "Kayak Ant," had the opportunity to spend time in one of the northernmost towns on Earth: Qaanaaq, Greenland. At this month's general meeting, he'll share with us his experience traveling there by kayak, as well as his experience meeting the indigenous Inuktun-Inuit people there.
Qaanaaq is one of the very few, if not the only place left in Greenland where indigenous people continue to hunt via qajaq and traditional means for subsistence and livelihood. Anthony's presentation will feature their story, their mix of modern and traditional methods of building qajaqs and hunting, and the challenges they face. He will also share images and stories from time on expedition above the Arctic Circle in the vast Inglefield Fjord.
A little about Ant: Anthony is an ACA open water coastal kayak instructor who works for organizations like Outward Bound and NOLS, and freelances as a coach and guide through his own company, Kayak ANT in Tarpon Springs. He has led expeditions in places like Maine, Alaska, Panama, North Carolina and of course, right here in Florida. After retiring from the U.S. Marine Corps, he combined his love for outdoor adventure with his background in education to pursue a second career in outdoor experiential education.
