"Beyond Shivering". Jan 16th @ 7pm on zoom. Dave Schmidt presenting.
We've all had days where the splashes and the drips and the breeze have had us chilled to the bone. A warm shower or better yet a hot tub later would be the perfect solution. Was this "mild hypothermia" or "just chilled"?
We'll talk about the clinical description of hypothermia and what signs we should be looking for while on a paddle, for ourselves as well as our friends. Some tips on how to help prevent the dangerous stages of hypothermia and what steps to consider if you recognize a minor problem becoming a major one.
Of course, "dress for immersion" will be discussed (but this is Florida..not a concern..right?)
Disclosure: I've had no formal medical training beyond some first aid classes which included Wilderness First Aid (highly recommend). Years of experience whitewater kayaking in Wisconsin and Montana, sea kayaking in the great lakes, etc. When the ice breaks up on the northern Wisconsin rivers in March our group would be doing seal launches off of ice shelves the following weekend. Yes, icicles hanging from the beard type stuff.
